Hola!
Finally, after one week in Spain I have a moment to journal! So much I could say, but let me start by saying that all is well. All three of us are healthy, well rested, well fed and no intestinal problems! Yay! Jim and Martha Towner (and their three lovely children; Ruthie 14, Ann Caroline 10, Johnny 6) have made us feel SO welcome. Our 4 bedroom apartment was already set up with basics (beds, towels and toilet paper!) when we arrived and we have figured out how to get by with a pretty simple life (no fridge, no furniture beyond beds, a table with 2 chairs and a van seat which doubles as a baby change station)
Funniest story so far: after 1 week of introducing myself as "Tah-rah" I found out that pronunication in Spain is the same word as ‘retarded or defective person’. Everyone was too polite to tell us! Finally someone told Martha. We laughed SO hard when we found out. So perhaps I will introduce myself as "Teh-rah" instead? My english pronunciation, Tear-ah, is a little too tricky for the Spanish tongue. Better check what ‘Teh-rah’ means first…could be a swear word. *lol* :D
Eden is the sparkling jewel in our lives…everyone in our little church in the town of Noia smothers her with love and kisses and she’s lapping it up. Everyone exclaims, "Que guapa! (How lovely!) Que bonita (How beautiful!)!!" when they meet her. No problems with her sleep, but she’s still not overly interested in solids (other than baby cookies and bread crust!) Oh well, maybe she’ll just go right past mushy stuff into bits and bites. When she’s ready she’ll let us know.
The Galician people (Galicia is the province of Spain we are living in) really know how to eat. Simple & delicious! Best cheese and milk I’ve ever tasted. Olives…..oh olives. How I love thee, let me count the ways! The only things we can’t find in Spain are peanut butter and Ziploc bags.
We’ll live…somehow.![]()
“Hola! Mi llama es Tara!” Everyone encourages our stumbling attempts at conversation. We’ve got some basics down, but a long way to go yet! Language classes twice a week in the nearby University town of Santiago are our lifesaver.
Enjoy the latest pictures posted in the photo gallery! We will update them regularly. Oh yes, and for anyone who has been or ever plans to visit Spain, know this: Galacia is unlike the rest of Spain in many ways; most notably in climate and topography (green and wet like the Pacific-Northwest). Until the next post…all our love.
